BritCham Chile, through its Sustainability Committee, held a session last Thursday focused on promoting emissions mitigation projects, with the participation of Jorge Gómez, Senior Advisor on Carbon Markets at the Ministry of the Environment. The session was moderated by Laura Landeta, president of BritCham’s Sustainability Committee, who led the dialogue between the speaker and the attendees.
During the presentation, the context of the triple environmental crisis facing Chile and the world was addressed, along with the country’s climate goals, highlighting the need to promote greenhouse gas reduction projects with environmental and social co-benefits. In this context, progress in implementing carbon pricing instruments was emphasized, as these instruments enable the creation of markets and the mobilization of investment, in a scenario where approximately one-third of global emissions are already subject to these mechanisms.
The roadmap for enabling investment in Chile was also presented, based on strengthening the regulatory framework—including the Framework Law on Climate Change—, coordinating national and international instruments, and promoting private sector participation in climate action.
The session also included a review of key tools such as the Emissions Compensation System (ECS), linked to the green tax, which in 2024 allowed for the offsetting of 20% of affected emissions, reflecting its growing importance. At the international level, the progress of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement was highlighted, which opens new investment opportunities in emissions reduction projects in areas such as biomass, energy storage, electromobility, and biogas valorization.
Finally, the importance of promoting innovative instruments such as blended finance, as well as nature-based solutions that contribute to the restoration, preservation, and sustainable use of ecosystems, was addressed. The day concluded with a dialogue session among the attendees, where the importance of public-private collaboration to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050 was reinforced.
