Santiago, Chile – On May 8, 2023, representatives from the British Community in Chile gathered at the Prince Of Wales Country Club for a dinner and dance in honour of the coronation of their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The charity event, organised by the British-Chilean Chamber of Commerce, The fourteenth Fire Brigade, The Commonwealth Society, and the Royal British Legion, raised funds for ACA (Alianza para la Acción Climática), a global organisation dedicated to fighting climate change.
The event was attended by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Chile, Louise de Sousa, leading climate champions Gonzalo Muñoz (Race to Zero and ACA brand ambassador), and María Teresa Ruiz-Tagle V. Directora Ejecutiva Líderes Empresariales por la Acción Climática, CLG-Chile, as well as high-ranking business leaders.
The evening began with a procession of bagpipes leading representatives from the organising bodies, each carrying the standard for their respective organisations. The two moderators for the ceremony – Leslie Hemery and Greg Holland – then invited to the stage María Teresa Ruiz-Tagle and Gonzalo Muñoz to talk about their vital work. Their presentations were followed by thanks to the charity donors, including HSBC, Colbún, Arauco, Antofagasta Minerals, Felipe & Heather Ibáñez Foundation and ICBC. The ceremony concluded with a dance to popular British music.
The event was preceded that morning by the King Charles III Charity Cup golf tournament, sponsored by HSBC, KPMG, BUPA, and Puente Sur, with food provided by Compass, drinks by F.H. Engel and gifts from InchCape through its Land Rover-Defender brand. All proceeds from the charity tournament and the dinner are to be donated to ACA.
King Charles has been an advocate for environmental causes and sustainable living since the 1970s, and has frequently spoken out about the need for action on climate change. In recent years, he has become more actively involved in promoting sustainable business practices and has established several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability in various sectors. The chosen beneficiary reflects his commitment to drive change in this area.
The King Charles III Charity Cup was presented to Antonio Cantó, Gerente General of the winning team, BUPA, by Ambassador Louise de Sousa. Prizes were also awarded for Best Long Drive, Straight Drive and Best Approach.
“We are proud to have organised these events to celebrate the coronation of their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and to raise funds for ACA to help them continue with their vital labour en materia de acción climática,” said Leslie Hemery, representing the British Community in Chile. Greg Holland went on to praise the support of the business community: “We are grateful for the support of our sponsors and donors, and we hope to continue making a positive impact in Chile and beyond, with regards to climate change.”
